Using A Backyard Garden For The Raw Food Diet Organic food is the best option for those on a raw food diet. Unlike usually grown crops organic crops are produced without the help of chemical elements such as artificial fertilizers and pesticides. As a result they are less harmful for both, your body and the environment. While organic food materials are steadily becoming popular they are yet to become widely available. Also, a number of fruits and vegetables are not produced organically yet. Due to such trouble in acquiring organic food materials a number of people have started to grow their own food materials in their own terrace or backyard. In case you want to start your garden as well but do not have the requisite amount of space then opt for container gardening. Container gardening is a convenient alternative to backyard or terrace gardens. They are also easy to keep and very suitable for flats or apartment with very little space to spare. Before beginning to work on your garden you will have to decide exactly what you want to grow. Since you are a raw foodist you should obviously try and plant a lot of stuff which you can be eaten uncooked. Also take into consideration how much of it you want to grow. Don’t sow stuff plentifully just because they are easy to grow. A number of people just don’t know what to do with the excess produce of their gardens. A friend of mine once handed me 5 zucchinis from her garden just to clear out her home! Try growing veggies like carrots, tomatoes that are both easy to maintain and quick to grow. Amongst fruits, berries such as strawberries work well in backyard gardens. Peas and herbs are few other options for you to explore. Start planting only after spring when you are sure that the last frost has completely faded out. Prepare the planting soil with a manure deposit and let it stay put for a good 10 days before you sow the seeds. Check the instruction label accompanying the seed packet to know when and where to plant. Once the planting is over remember to water the area liberally. Also leave tiny tags to indicate where exactly you have planted your seeds. This way you won’t mistake the sprouted seeds for weed. Also spray soap water on the seeds to keep pests away in an organic way. If you have decided to have a container garden do ensure that your containers have enough space and allows good drainage. If the water doesn’t leave the pots the roots will rot easily. Try and put a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the pot to allow the water to sit. This way the soil will have a chance to re-absorb the moisture even after it has ran out. Also make sure you don’t water your plants too much. Make sure the plants you sow do not take a lot of space, herbs are a good choice in this regard. If you have planted a tomato or a cherry plant you will have to provide a stick or a wall to allow it grow taller |
